What Are All Those 100s of Millions of Americans Doing Online?
Perhaps you are like me and spend a good bit of your day reading and searching online. Turns out it is the most common past time, now passing even TV. Have you ever wondered what everyone else is searching online? If you have ever considered this, then boy do I have a good book to recommend to you:
“Click – What Millions of People are Doing Online and Why it Matters” by Bill Tancer; Hyperion, NY – 2008.
He stated in his introduction that it takes a village to write a book, obviously a take-off on Hilary Clinton’s famous line; “it takes a village to raise a child.” He was obviously trying to say that he had a lot of help putting all this data into a book form.
An example of how the Internet reveals truth. A famous psychologist was on the BBC stating that the most depressing time of the year was the third week in January, this bothered Bill Tancer, who thought otherwise and in checking the data, he was correct. Why, was the psychologist being interviewed by the BBC wrong, when he stated the reasons were due to credit card bills coming due for Christmas Gift spending and failures on New Year’s resolution.
Well, Bill Tancer’s search record’s showed it was after Thanksgiving, more people searched suicides, depression, and were looking for psyche drugs. But this is not the only surprise that his data revealed, turns out that High School girls start searching for Prom Dresses much earlier than ever thought, “prom dress” keywords are more searched in January!
Why is all this important? Well, if you are an online marketer or sell something on the Internet such information is vital. But did you know that online gambling, porn, and things to do with New Year’s Resolutions are the most searched – losing weight, stop smoking, and exercise schedules.
Amongst some of the top searches are “how to . . .” and “Fear of . . .” and although not too surprising, it is a statistical fact that you can use to win in online marketing. And believe it or not those are 3% of all searches too! Anyway, I highly recommend that you read this book.
