Whether you’re running for Senator, President, or City Council, there are a few basic steps you’ll need to take to get your name out there, be recognized and grab those votes. These five steps will take you where you need to go.

1 – Meet the people in their world. Shake hands, visit and find out who the people really are. This is probably the most important step to winning your run for office. Your own visibility is the primary issue of getting to know your constituency.

2 – Share your views. Tell them where you stand on the issues and have a strong position that says something about you and your purpose for running for the office. Take a stand!

3 – Listen to their views. If your constituents have a different view, consider their standing and if your stand is wrong, be willing to change your views. Be sure you hear them because they are who you represent.

4 – Remember their names. This is important, because you may never see their face again, but they’ll call you, they’ll write you, and they deserve to be remembered. Remember their names and write them down. Be sure you have contact information.

5 – Be technically savvy and understand that your voice may not be heard any other way. Get with the current networking programs and find your niche and fill it up with YOU. You can be heard in ways that make a difference, but you have to make the effort.
