How to Love Making Extra Money
Most of us have, at some point in our lives, needed extra money.
Many of us have also taken jobs to earn extra money that we absolutely hated. (The worst summer job I ever heard of was collecting sperm from bulls…I don’t even want to know how they do that. It can’t be pretty.)
With a little imagination, and belief that you can do something different and succeed, you can earn extra money (or even start a new, exciting career) and have a good time doing it.
FIRST: DISCOVER THE WHY–THE HOW WILL COME LATER–BUT YOU MUST HAVE SPECIFIC WHY’S TO MAKE LONG TERM LIFE CHANGES. MAKE A LIST OF WHAT YOU REALLY, REALLY WANT, e.g.:
-Quit my job and work from home.
-Pay off all of my debt within the next 2 years.
-Take a 6 month vacation in Europe.
-Buy a Porsche, (or any other exciting thing you’ve wanted forever.)
-Send my daughter to college.
-Buy my dream house.
-Buy season tickets.
-Start a shelter for homeless teens.
ONCE YOU HAVE YOUR WHY YOU NEED TO MAKE AN EXTENSIVE LIST OF EVERYTHING YOU LOVE TO DO, e.g.:-organize stuff (cabinets, drawers, finances, computer information)
-write
-shop
-build things
-garden
-read and tell jokes, stories, etc.
-make kids laugh
-be with animals
-nap
NOW THAT YOU HAVE YOUR LIST OF WHAT YOU REALLY ENJOY DOING START RESEARCHING AND CREATING FUN THINGS TO DO WITHIN THOSE CATEGORIES THAT WILL MAKE YOU MONEY, e.g.
-Organize: be a virtual assistant.
-Write: learn how to write for magazines, write blogs for businesses, help students write papers, tutor.
-Shop: be a mystery shopper, offer a shopping service for business people and people who cannot get out to shop. Offering a grocery shopping service to busy people could be very lucrative.
-Build things: Combine this one with “garden” and build flower boxes. Fill the boxes with hardy flowers and plants and offer them, including installation, to businesses and individuals. Or combine your love of kids and building things and build playhouses.
-Read and tell jokes, stories: start a joke website or blog, become a story teller, do kids and adult birthday parties.
-Make kids laugh: teach kids something fun (again, perhaps as a party entertainer or a class), e.g. magic, joke telling, how to build something fun.
-Animals: be a pet sitter, take pets to the vet or groomer for the busy person.
-Nap: if you just like to hang out and not do much, you might consider house sitting or being an elder companion.
The key to success is to solve someone’s problems (e.g. how to entertain 9 year old boys for an hour, or how to keep home and animals safe and secure when they go out of town). The key to your happiness is to marry that service or product to something you really get a kick out of.
And, finally, make certain that all of the money you make goes toward the item or experience you’ve identified as your “why.” Don’t let your extra $100 you made this weekend go to buying pizza and movie tickets. Funnel it into that very special dream (like paying off your credit cards) and you can totally re-create your life!
Remember the famous words from Napoleon Hill: WHATEVER THE HUMAN MIND CAN CONCEIVE AND BELIEVE IT CAN ACHIEVE.
Best of luck to you and let me hear how you are doing with what you really, really want!
