Snowboarding – How to Turn Your Hobby Into a Business
Did you know that your hobby can become a catalyst for starting a business of your own? While most people will never snowboard down a mountain they surely admire the athleticism, daring and agility of those of you who do it for competition and fun.
One of the things that companies look to do when advertising their products is to create a theme around what they are selling. People are more likely to buy something when they associate a product with a person. This is called branding. In other words, when you think of Dove Soap, for example, you don’t visualize a burley backwoodsman washing his hands in a barnyard sink. You think of girls and women displaying a wholesome sexuality. Soap is just soap without the image associated with it. When you think of Purdue Chicken the image of the quirky, older guy ice skating around a rink or doing gymnastic feats on a desk comes to mind. What does this have to do with chicken? Absolutely nothing. But somehow the idea of a slaughterhouse where chickens are killed by the thousands probably wouldn’t sell many chickens.
The image of a snowboarder to most people is one of youthful exuberance, energy and fun. What kind of company or product do you think would be a good fit in this case? As a snowboarder you can begin to do what the big name athletes do. They brand themselves, or companies brand them as themes to wrap their products around.
There are several health, nutrition and energy drink companies that look for budding entrepreneurs to move their products worldwide. Their products sit in warehouses until someone like you comes along and sells them. This isn’t selling in the traditional way that you may be thinking. With the advent of social networking sites like YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and MySpace any given individual with the creativity, imagination and know how can build a massive following of people online who are interested in what you have to offer them. You can upload videos of yourself directly to YouTube from your computer where you can talk about snowboarding, give tips about snowboarding or anything else associated with snowboarding and begin to brand yourself as someone who has something to say to people who are interested in the same things that you are.
Some nutrition and energy drink companies, for example, work through a method of distribution called hybrid marketing. Hybrid marketing is a combination of retail, person-to-person and online marketing promotion. These companies allow you to tie into their systems of distribution as independent contractors. and to develop a business that can spread worldwide. The name of the game here is to brand yourself around their product and what that product is about.
Starting a business at any age is an exciting endeavor, but to turn your hobby into an enterprise you will have to learn online marketing skills, be willing to learn, and have the desire to achieve. As a television producer, boxing trainer, and online marketer I certainly know the value of advertising and dedication to one’s craft. When you can mix together your own personality, skill as a snowboarder, knowledge of online marketing techniques and personal drive, there is no one who can stop you. Be bold, be creative, don’t let artificial fears get in your way, and above all believe in yourself. If you do these things you will be successful in business and in life.
