International business students love to talk about case study analysis and scenarios in dealing with international business marketing, and strategic planning. One of the most interesting places on the planet is Dubai, with its giant skyscrapers some of the tallest in the world. In fact, it’s unbelievable master-planned resorts, and its fantasy approach to the future.

Of course, all this does come at a tremendous cost. Billions and billions of dollars have been pumped into the economic engine in Dubai, but after the global economic meltdown and crisis no place on earth was unscathed. Dubai has seen a 75% reduction in residential home values for their middle-class workforce that was entrusted to build this Disneyland like city.

Most of the major skyscraper projects are also half built, everything has stopped. With construction jobs stopped no one wants to buy a middle-class home there anymore, and many of the workers that came from other countries to build all of this, are leaving or have left.

So, what can Dubai in the blue sky do to help promote its economic recovery and to make use of all these half built buildings? Recently a US think tank came up with a solution and one that might intrigue international business students. Why not promote extreme sporting events such as B.A.S.E. jumping?

That may sound funny but some of these buildings are half a mile up an unfinished, and they have giant cranes on top of them. A base jumper could climb up to the top go out on the outer crane arm and then jump off over the city pulling his parachute and exciting the crowds below. Tourists would come to see this and it would bring in some inflows to the faltering Dubai economy. Please consider all this.
