These days, job interviews are precious. If you are being interviewed, it means that you are one of only a few candidates out of hundreds of applicants who are seriously being considered for the position. Therefore, it is imperative that you prepare adequately for job interview success because these things don’t come down the pike every day, not nowadays.

First the obvious stuff, just to get it out of the way:

1. Dress well. It shows respect. Would you want to hire someone who didn’t bother to dress up for the interview?
2. Sit up straight. Yeah, posture matters. Slouchy posture is subconsciously read as laziness.
3. Arrive 15 minutes early. Take a bathroom break. Straighten your tie. Dab the sweat off your brow. Make sure lunch isn’t still stuck in your teeth.
4. Just tell the truth. It’s much easier to speak the truth, and this will do wonders for any nerves you might have.
5. Don’t be “Guy Smiley” unless you’re interviewing for a sales job. Everyone is nervous and pinched. Be sober and professional.

Now the less obvious stuff:

There is a specific formula for job interview success. It is hidden and unknown to most job seekers (and almost all interviewers) so you should consider yourself very lucky to have found this article. If you’re smart, you’ll explore further.

The formula is this: PAAR.

For every question the interviewer asks, you can have a ready answer that will knock their socks off if only you follow this formula.

* Problem
* Analysis
* Action
* Result

Even though they might not know it, this is what employers want to hear: that you can solve their problems. Think of four or five stories in your career — they must be true stories — that illustrate that you can do this. Don’t worry if the example is from a different industry or different role. Just show that you can do this, and you will get hired. I absolutely guarantee it.
