Releasing Associates Due to Downsizing
You have received a call that you have to release 3 associates to meet the new company staffing goals. This can be extremely tough depending on your staffing situation overall.
There are several possibilities you should consider, do you have anyone that has told you they will be leaving in the near future, is anyone going back to school, transfer due to military orders. The list can go on and on I am basically trying to get your mind thinking of a solution.
There is also the possibility that you have marginal performers that have been counseled for poor performance. I have had people go from marginal to excellent after counseling so that isn’t a definite solution either.
Regardless of how you make your decision give the associates that you will be letting go a professional explanation. If you let marginal associates go then explain their performance doesn’t meet your expectations that were explained when they were hired. You can end this on a positive note explaining that if they will take the training provided by your company and apply themselves in a new job they can be successful.
The toughest job is when you have to let an excellent associate go. Several things you can offer are a personal reference or a letter to future employers. In addition you can advise them if a position becomes available that you will call them immediately. This can become a reality in short order, I have experienced this one on several occasions.
It’s tough releasing associates take time to personally talk with everyone of them; it’s the professional thing to do.
