Maximizing Your Production is All About Getting the Biggest Bang For Your Buck
This is our slogan for our Production Maximizing site. It’s pretty impossible to expend any kind of energy these days without it costing you something. Whether you do the work or someone else does, there is a cost related to the labor. At the labor level, there is no hiding from the time clock that ticks away whether you are productive or not. I want to deal with that concept here for a moment.
Torque
What does torque have to do Maximizing your production? In this case, it could be useful. Imagine you are trying to change a tire on your car. You have the tire iron out and you are trying to loosen one of the lug nuts on the flat. It will not budge no matter how hard you try to turn it. What you need is a little more power, you need to increase the torque. What do you do? You get a pipe that fits over the tire iron; you use this extra length of pipe to give you more power, more torque, and presto, off comes the nut.
You want to find ways to increase your torque when it comes to increasing your production. I have a simple procedure that is a guaranteed winner in this regard. It’s so simple that the majority of people that I have worked with on it do not use it because they feel that there must be more to it than this and they ignore it. Let’s take a look at it.
Focus Less On The Hours Expended And More On The Results That Are Achieved
It took me a long time to come to this place, probably longer than it should have. At least I finally got there that is the main thing. I was way too wrapped up in the hours that someone would clock in and paid too little attention to what they achieved in those hours. That kind of thought process made me a slave to the clock and made me a poor manager, a poor owner and even a poorer mentor. When did I see the light?
I Wish I Knew!
There was not a blinding light in the sky and a sudden realization that I was not focusing on what I should. It was a gradual transformation from being a clock-watcher and what I call a “grinder”, someone who was a nickel and dime-er, to some one who was looking at the big picture and the long-term benefits. Not a very complimentary term, but a true one. I began to look at spending time now, to gain an advantage down the road. And not only down the road but forever. When you spend some time to properly train an employee or yourself, you are spending a one-time allotment of time that will maximize itself over your lifetime. Perhaps lifetime is a bit optimistic but the fact is, one of the greatest maximizers you can ever get working on your side is investing your time and effort into activities that will be performed for multiple repetitions after the fact.
For example, you hire a new employee. His first day on the job, do you send him out on the truck and hope the guy with him trains him? Or do you take the time to work with him, making sure he knows what he is to do and that he is doing it properly? Sounds like common sense, doesn’t it? Think again. Investing just a short chunk of your time to ensure that he knows what to do will maximize that time you spent, every day he is on the job and doing it right. Remember our torque example above? This small bit of time you spent is just like the pipe we used to increase our power to enable us to get that lug nut off. Sometimes it’s not the amount of power that you use, but at what point you bring it to bear that counts.
I want to add just one more short point. There is a tendency to think of increasing our productivity in terms of other people. I continually look inward when I think of getting better and more productive. It’s part of the awareness that is imperative if you want to get the biggest bang for your buck.
