Should Team Building Include Challenges?
In some studies and research carried out, individuals who have been part of team building exercises and events have stated that the most beneficial ones are those that offer challenges for the group to untangle and accomplish. Challenges may seem like trouble but what is beneficial about them (in any form) is their ability to get the group to think together, at the same time, to tackle the task at hand. In short, this is just what you want the group to learn about team building: that tasks can be tackled together and in such they can be highly successful.
Fight or Flight?
Since the dawn of man, one thing has been part of their makeup and that is the survival instinct of fight or flight. When an obstacle or a challenge presents itself, the individual has two decisions. They can stay and fight the challenge in the hope of overcoming it. Or, they can run from it, to get away. While the days of being chased by wild animals may be less common today, the fight or flight survival tactic tasks place in the work environment.
Most business owners would say that they want their employees to stay and fight through the challenge so that they can accomplish the goal that is before them, which is often something beneficial for the business. On the other hand, it is quite common for the person who does not have a strong sense of confidence or may be lacking in support to run. This could delay a project, hold off a temperamental client or even cause a business to miss valuable opportunities. What is beneficial about the fight or flight survival instinct is that it can be improved and it can be enhanced by simply knowing what the options are.
Team building can help to improve this feeling. When you design and hold a team building event within your business, several things can be accomplished, including the ability help an individual feel as if they can stay and fight. For example, activities that are challenges can help individuals to feel more like a team player. They can also teach the individual how to get help or how to use their other members to help them to solve the challenges they face. In some cases, effective team building can help to improve the confidence of the group as a whole.
As you can see, challenge is a part of everyday life, especially in the work place. Even when things run well, there are challenges in some situations. The good news is that if you have a strong team ethos within your business, your team can and will succeed at working together to achieve the common goals of the group.
