Team Building Event – Why it Could Fail?
You have invested the time and money into developing a team building event for your employees. You are set to believe that this particular activity is going to increase your team’s effectiveness through whatever means you have selected. More so, your goals are set and high. You are hoping that this type of activity is going to motivate your group so much so that your business will see sales growth from it. The problem is, many of these types of events are actually designed to fail. Many people simply do not have the resources and information to execute them properly. They make mistakes that could cost them any real benefit.
What mistakes are the most common ones made? There are several including the following.
1. One mistake that can be made is made innocently, in most cases, by the business establishing the meeting. Here, there is no buy in for the employee that is attending. In other words, you have to answer the question, “what’s in it for me” if you plan to be successful during your building exercises. It is critical to show to the group why they should want this.
2. Lack of organisation within the exercises and activities is another reason why there may be failure. In short, you need to have a structured plan that takes the team through a step by step process that outlines the objective. You may find that if the event is not organised, tasks happen out of order, reducing their effectiveness in the long term.
3. If the approach is too generic it will lack any lasting value. This is particularly important if the event is done off the grounds. For example, if your group is heading to a golf outing, some may see this is just a way to get out of work. It may lack structure towards the goal that you are actually trying to accomplish.
4. It is critical to point out the importance of working as a team, not just a group. In a group, some may step up and take over, handling the event activities on their own for the entire group of people. On the other hand, a team must play to the goals of the actual participants. Each one needs to partake in the event, to make it successful.
As you consider the various options you have for a team building event, keep in mind the importance of keeping your team on track. It is critical to put a plan in place successfully that encompasses these critical aspects. When you can work to accomplish these goals effectively, your event will not fail but will achieve the lasting goals that you are hoping to achieve in the short and long term.
