It’s increasingly common for a person’s laptop to be their main computer that they carry everywhere and use for virtually everything. Think about your personal situation: Are you carrying a laptop that has lots of valuable personal and professional files and data? If so, is the information backed up anywhere? If your answer is no, you need to get a personal backup strategy in place immediately. Laptop theft is common, and if it should happen to you, you are setting yourself up for numerous personal and job-related issues.

The ideal scenario with a laptop is to have everything important or unique backed up elsewhere, and to have the computer password protected or encrypted to limit the amount of damage that could be caused by your computer falling into the wrong hands. Even just your email account can give a thief access to a lot of your personal information and various accounts.

Some people regularly make time to save their important files to DVDs that they keep at home or even in a safe deposit box. Other people use software to duplicate their laptop hard drive to an external hard drive. Another good solution is to subscribe to an online backup service that automatically and transparently copies your files to an offsite location via the Internet. Though it can be slow and take a long time to get set up, this is probably the easiest way because you don’t have to add anything extra to remember to your routine and you can be confident that everything is being taken care of in the background.
