The benefits of adding external speakers to your computer setup are numerous, but the selection of computer speakers can be dizzying and overwhelming. So many different styles and brands are available that it can be confusing to make a good choice. In general, there are three categories of computer speakers. The first is simply a pair of stereo speakers. Often they are designed to sit on the desk on either side of your monitor, but can sometimes also hang from your screen or be mounted on the wall or ceiling. Depending on the size and design of the speakers, they will vary in house well they reproduce the sound. Full range speakers tend to be larger and can reproduce deep bass sounds. Small speakers will lack good bass and will be weighted towards mid-range and treble.

Another type is a pair of speakers matched with a single subwoofer unit. The subwoofer typically sits on the floor and provides the bass and sub-bass frequencies that most stereo speakers lack. This will typically result in fuller sound than simply a pair of stereo speakers.

The next step up is a surround sound system. Typically this means 5.1 channel surround sound which typically includes a pair of front speakers, a pair of rear stereo speakers, a center channel speaker and finally a subwoofer. This can be great for watching movies on your computer or playing immersive games. It’s probably not necessary in order to be able to enjoy music from your computer.
