In this day and age this might sound strange, but it still happens all too often. In the 1980′s, this happened a lot, and many young girls were affected by it, some to the point of anorexia. There is not much publicity about it any more, but it is still happening at an alarming rate and not talked about as much. One of the causes is society’s ideal of what women should look like. Articles and photos in magazines show very waif-like women. Most people don’t realize this but those photos are often airbrushed, and those models don’t really look like that. Society expects them to, so to make them look “perfect” they brush the photos to make them look like what is “normally” unachievable. This really has to be addressed with our young children, both in school and at home, so that they realize they don’t need to starve themselves to someone else’s ideals.

When you start to diet (or maybe we should abolish that word and use the term, “eating healthy”,) you will probably start to exercise as well. Do not overdo it. Yes, you CAN overdo exercising. With some people it becomes an absolute obsession, and it really isn’t necessary, or necessarily healthy to push your body so hard. Twenty minutes a day of exercise, such as walking, is great for your lungs and bringing oxygen to all of your organs, and is also low impact on your joints. A trip to the gym or local recreation center is also a good way to spend a little time on the fitness equipment or swimming. Most recreation centers are setup so that residents sometimes may join for free or for a very low cost.

Remember to use wise decisions, and if exercise begins to overtake your life, make some adjustments. Overdoing it may actually be unhealthy and dangerous.
