Most of us who have used e-mail use it from the home or office. There are also those who have managed a website at one time or another. If you fall into any of these categories, you have probably at some point used or encountered an autoresponder.

Autoresponders are pre-written messages that you occasionally receive as a reply to an e-mail that you have sent. Most often, people use these responders to let friends or clients know that they are out of the office or on vacation and will get back to them soon. They are helpful for users in a few different ways. Mainly, they can be used to get the same information out to many people at one time. An example of this would be a professor who needs to send his or her students a weekly e-mail with course assignments. Students could be told beforehand to look for these e-mails at a predetermined time.

Unfortunately, automatic responders have been known to be used for less positive purposes as well. Spammers use them to reach millions of people at a time, usually to fill their inbox with unwanted ads. This is annoying to many of us, and some people have even had to close their e-mail altogether because of these spam attacks. Because of this, many e-mail users now turn on a spam filter, one that might unintentionally block automatic responses from legitimate sources (like that friend on vacation, for example).

So, there are definitely good and bad sides to automatic responders, but if you use yours with good intentions, they can definitely be very helpful. If you do think you want an autoresponder, you can get one free through any number of online services.
