Using a desktop autoresponder may at first appear to have some great benefits but in my experience they are not as good as they seem. Here I look at some of the benefits and why you are still probably better using one of the online services.

Everything is in one place – this is true but this is the case for the online services too.

Using a desktop autoresponder means I don’t need to be connected to the internet – In terms of the initial set up this may be true although you can easily prepare everything offline and simply copy and paste into the online service once you are online.

The advantage of not having to be online soon becomes a disadvantage when it comes to sending out the autoresponder emails. Using an online service means you can schedule all emails to be sent at specific periods so your list receive regular timely communications.

However with a desktop autoresponder you can only send emails when you are connected not at specific intervals…and if god forbid something happened to your pc or internet connection and you can’t connect for a few days, where does that leave you?

I have complete control of the data – Yes but with control comes responsibility. If you use a desktop autoresponder you are then also responsible for the security of this data. If there any spam complaints you are on your own and could face the full weight of the law.

The online autoresponder services have responsibility for the security of the data and generally have more controls in place then a desktop autoresponder to prevent or at least defend you against any spam complaints.

So although on the face of it a desktop autoresponder may have several advantages, in reality that isn’t really the case. When you also take into account the simplicity of using an online autoresponder service, for me there is no competition.

I’ve used both of the top online autoresponder services for several years and have written a quick and easy review of them on my blog at

Its interesting that they are both very similar services and both very similar prices yet most of the top online marketers all seem to prefer Aweber. For me, Aweber does just edge it simply because I find it a little more user friendly.
