Does it make sense to build a website only to sell it later?

In practically all the Internet or affiliate marketing informational products I’ve purchased, they tell me to basically pursue one strategy: Find a hot niche, build a website that sells to this niche and repeat the whole process for a different niche.

Well I really do like this idea. Building up a “virtual real estate” empire that if properly executed will bring me an ongoing income stream for life… never having to work for anyone else… at least that’s the dream.

I’m sure many people share this dream. However, how many of us feel we are going to actually achieve this? I don’t doubt the people who write and sell the information we are given. I’m sure they are successful with the methods they reveal to us.

But imagine the amount of work involved to accomplish and maintain all of this. It sure would be nice if all our sites get high traffic and income. But we know that not all of them will. Nothing is as discouraging as having sites perform well in the beginning but later fall off in search engine ranking and income.

Part of the blame is that we don’t do a good job of maintaining our sites or we neglect them after we’ve moved on to more interesting projects. If you lose interest in a site and it doesn’t earn the income it once did, wouldn’t that be the time you should consider selling it?

Well, that’s something to think about. But don’t take forever to decide to keep or sell your sites. Not taking action ensures more money will be lost and that’s not the reason you are building sites for in the first place.
