Top 3 Reasons Why You Should Raise Chickens
Chickens are easy to keep and don’t require a lot of care as compared to other animals. Many cities are now letting people keep chickens in their backyards so more and more people are raising chickens.
FRESH EGGS – Chickens lay eggs and most will lay 2-3 days in a row and then take a day off. Eggs from your own chickens are so fresh and taste wonderful. The yolks are darker in color than store bought eggs. Can you imagine getting fresh eggs every day from just a few hens?
Depending on what breed of chicken you get, you can have a variety of different egg colors. Blue, green, various shades of brown and white eggs are laid by chickens. Kids especially love the green and blue eggs!
LOW MAINTENANCE – Chickens are pretty low maintenance. They require housing to protect them from predators and the elements. Water and food are also necessary. Chickens will eat scraps from your kitchen. Think how much food you throw out every week. Instead of wasting the food you could be feeding the food to your chickens. If you let your chickens free range in your backyard they will also eat grass and weeds as well as any bugs and worms they come across.
Depending on your climate you will also need to provide you chickens with a heat source during cold winter months. A heating light is all that’s necessary to keep them nice and warm.
FERTILIZER – Chickens will give you natural organic fertilizer for your garden. No more buying expensive fertilizer! Your chickens will give you plenty.
Raising chickens is a lot of fun and teaches young kids responsibility and respect for animals.
