Creative Problem Solving Requires an Understanding of the Question
Have you ever heard the saying; “If you ask the wrong question, you will get the wrong answer,” well, it’s true what they say and this is where creative problem-solving can help you make great leaps of understanding. You cannot creatively solve any problem or challenge in life unless you understand the question, and sometimes the question is more important than the answer.
Think about that for a second.
The first thing you should do when you are trying to creatively solve any situation is to ask yourself questions. Then you should question your own questions. Then consider the answer to all the questions and some questions which you previously considered.
Far too often, people solve problems only to find out that they have created and yet another. We call this the “Law of Unintended Consequences” and it is rather interesting that we have a law or theory that surrounds that, but the reason is that it happens all too often.
They say that a creative genius creates something and is never recognized; this occurs because it is the brilliant problem solvers that come and take care of the problems in a crisis, then they create yet another problem, where someone else comes along and solve it, and they are then recognized as problem solvers. Still, had the original thinkers understood the question better there would never be any future problems, this is why the creative genius is rarely recognized.
The other day one of our group think tanks was trying to solve the problem of how to kill a hurricane? Then someone said why do you want to kill it, why not just steer it? Another person said what if the region needs the water and needs the energy of the storms deliver to bring in the water to prevent a drought? By understanding the question in the real problem we can come to a better understanding of how to solve it.
Now that might seem like a simple process, but we spent a good 10 minutes using all of our brain power to ask more questions to drill down what it was we were really trying to do. But that 10 minutes spent ahead of time could have easily said saved us hundreds if not thousands of hours of problem-solving in the wrong direction. Do you see that point? Please consider all this.
