Engagement ring is a symbol that defines a commitment of marriage among two individuals who are going to create a bond with one another in a life long affiliation as husband and wife. It is a pledge of love and given to one another after the wedding proposal is agreed on both sides. Traditionally, this ring is offered as betrothal gift by man to his expected bride.

This culture dates back to many years and basically a tradition of western countries where woman uses to wear these commitment rings in the second last finger of her left hand to show that their sentiment or emotions are engaged with someone and they are no longer single. However, in many other countries these rings are used to wear in the second last finger of right hand as well. Historically, it was commonly supposed that the second last finger of left hand contained a vein of love known as vena amoris. It was believed that this vein had direct connection to the heart, that’s why engagement rings were used to wear in that particular finger. It was thought that this would help to join the couple by heart.

In some western countries, engagement rings achieve the status of conditional presents that cannot be annulled once given. In recent trends, mostly in the western countries, these rings are also used by men as well. Men rings are usually a band of some precious metal. However, it’s not a common trend and most often wrist watch is the main accessory to present a man. Prices of engagement rings may vary depending on the material used in its formation, the design of the ring, weight, color, cuts or quality. Some rings may have gemstones, diamonds or any other valuable accessory, so price varies according to the value and quality. These rings may range from few hundred dollars to thousand dollars.

Like other jewelry and accessory, these rings are also classified on the basis of their various styles. In mid 20th century, diamond was widely used element in these rings and the most popular style. Diamond is sometime used as a single diamond or sometime a larger diamond is used to set in the middle of the ring and other small diamonds are systematically arranged around. The tradition of diamond rings is associated with Italians. However, French were the first who used these rings for beloved ones.
