Travel With Kids – At the Hotel
Traveling with children can be a great way to spend time as a family and to build memories that will last a lifetime. However, taking your kids with you can pose a few complications, especially when it comes to your accommodations. If you are traveling within the United States, you will probably have access to the amenities that you need, but if you are traveling worldwide, you’ll likely have to do a lot more packing and preparation.
Many parents choose to take safety items with them when they travel. For example, most hotels do not have safety plugs for power outlets. This means that you will need to supply your own. You can pack them with you or purchase them locally when you arrive. Once you arrive at your destination, do a quick survey of your hotel and check for any potential hazards. Things to look for include cords, books of matches, and objects that could be potential choking hazards. Remove any objects that could be dangerous and help your child become familiar with the new surroundings.
If your child will be sleeping in a crib, check the crib before use, especially if you are traveling in a foreign country. Many countries do not have strict safety standards. The main thing you need to check for is how much room there is between the bars of the crib; if this space is too wide, your child could be in danger of getting his or her head stuck between the slats. It is always better to be safe than sorry, and if you can, pack your own bassinet or sleeping area for your small child.
Bathroom safety should also be taken into consideration. Be sure that any medications are kept out of the reach of children, just like you would do when you are home. Test the hot water to make sure that it won’t potentially scald your child; if the water is too hot, make sure that you assist your child when bathing or brushing teeth.
While these precautions may seem like a little much, paying attention to safety issues in your hotel room will help you avoid undue injury. It doesn’t take long to go through the dos and don’ts for your children, and once you make this a habit when you travel, your children will learn that travel safety is just as important as safety while at home.
